Zen Inspired Addition
After ten years it had become clear what worked about the house and what was needed. It was time for a change. Of necessity, the original renovation was a compromise that retained a small master bedroom, little closed space and a minimal bath. We were able to add to the existing footprint of the house to expand those areas, and were fortunate to have the space to include another wishlist item, a four season sunroom. The client asked for a Zen influenced design. We followed the idea of using simple, expressive natural materials with clean lines and without extraneous decoration. Cabinetry work was informed by the tonsu, a multi-comparmented storage unit often found in Japanese and Korean households. Washi paper covers some walls and rough finished wood clads the bathroom walls.
