Eclectic Coastal Farmhouse

This project entailed a total remodel of a 1970s California ranch style home. We took down walls and reconfigured rooms to give this young family more usable space. Deleting the formal dining room allowed us to expand the space for a large cook’s kitchen and informal farmhouse-like dining area where the family spends a lot of their time. We also added custom built-ins throughout the home giving this family the tidy storage solutions they craved. For a small, young girl’s room with an attic-like slanted ceiling that we decided to embrace, we designed custom built-in Captain’s beds – perfect for a sleepover and for extra storage. In the boys room, we deleted closet doors and designed a custom built-in that tripled the storage and added a point of interest to four simple walls. We also designed woodwork on many of the walls of the house, ceilings and passageways. We added a mixture of paneling, wainscoting and tongue and groove, honing the farmhouse feel. We deleted a cramped and unusable coat closet beneath the stairs and transformed it into a pantry for our client, an avid cook and canner. One of our favorite tasks in this house was to delete a dated wood and iron staircase and banister and replace it with our custom designed railing of rectangles which married well with the angles of the home. We also added several windows and a few sky lights throughout the home to bring in natural light. There are so many details in this home that we love. And the best thing about this project was working with this wonderful and artistic family and giving them the practical, comfortable and creative living space they deserved.
