PARK AVENUE FOYER
PAULA+MARTHA met the challenge of creating a timeless yet modern design update for the foyer of a landmark Park Avenue residence by developing a concept that would bring a “refined tranquility” to the space. The firm incorporated an opulent mix of antique furnishings and accents, as well as custom pieces. The serene palette featured soft tones of beige, pale green and mauve, accented with gold and bronze. As the color choices were rather delicate, she sought out the very finest commercial-grade versions of the sumptuous upholstery fabrics to ensure both durability and ease of care.
The cast of richly appointed custom furnishings includes a duet of lounge chairs in beige mohair trimmed in nail head studs; Louis XVI-inspired benches with bolsters; aged bronze “X” benches with Greek key detail; and mahogany and woven brass radiator cabinets with travertine tops. Her custom design genius is further exemplified in the large mounted art piece she created using an exquisite Japanese-inspired wall covering by DeGournay; as well as the entryway sconces which she fashioned from repurposed 19th Century Swedish demilune tables imported from Paris. The stunning crotch mahogany reception desk is a loving ode to Jean Michel Frank.
Other embellishments include a striking 19th Century Swedish Empire Mirror; a 19th Century English rosewood center table; a hand carved giltwood chandelier; a neo-classical mirror with Deco discs; and a pair of Swedish late Gustavian style giltwood barrel-back chairs. A Tibetan hand-knotted wool and silk area rug completes the rich, yet soothing tableau.
