For this 1,700 square foot apartment, which is located in a modern high-rise doorman building in midtown Manhattan, PAULA+MARTHA’s goal was to create a design scheme that would be fun and engaging, but with a sophisticated edge. Also, the space needed to be flexible enough to handle frequent entertaining.

The team culled a winsome palette of sunny yellow, bright orange and royal blue to accent neutral tones of navy, white, grey and beige.

Highlights of the completed design include lots of custom-designed pieces, including the foyer’s round mirror with square white lacquer frame floating above a sleek three-drawer white metal console table. Flanking the mirror is a pair of polished nickel table lamps accented with bright orange silk drum shades. Beneath the console sits a custom “X” bench covered in Fortuny fabric.

The living room features still more custom creations, like the silk/wool carpet; sectional sofa, lounge chair, and marble-top coffee table with cast iron base. The clean, modern lines of the furnishings are further heightened by a a trio of graphic framed works on paper.

The guest bedroom was designed to double as a media room, thanks to a custom designed and upholstered daybed with built-in storage. There’s also a vintage lacquered dresser with shell handles, as well as a ceramic table lamp with linen shade.

The dining area is anchored by a custom dark walnut veneered table with satin-finish brass base and custom upholstered dining chairs with faux ebonized macassar finish. An original pendant light with silk shade hangs above the table.
