Contemporary Arts and Crafts Mountain Top Estate in Woodstock

This was a large addition which tripled the size of a 1960’s cabin located in an incredibly inspiring location on the mountain just outside of the village of Woodstock. The overall style of the house is similar to the great American Shingle style of the 19th century but with contemporary scale and modern details for todays lifestyles. I retained the original footings and exterior walls of the cabin to reduce construction impact and costs; nothing else remained as the cabin was in bad shape and had no aesthetic merits. I wanted to insure that the new structure seemed like it was always there, so I chose some local materials (wood in natural tones, blue stone and rocks quarried right from the foundation dig) and also used a local vernacular style for some architectural details. The site has 360 degree mountain and pond views and faces southwest, so the windows and doors are large and open to the many outdoor spaces year round. Keeping materials on the natural side and respecting local styles of house certainly helped blend the structure seamlessly into the environment, as it never seemed to scream “new” and seemed to always belong on this beautiful site.
