Myra Kirby is a third-generation New Englander who grew up in Newport, Rhode Island, surrounded by its beautiful beaches, coastal cliffs and historic mansions. Growing up in a large family of seven children definitely fostered Myra's ability to make any space individualized yet entirely, attractively functional. Her mother was her earliest influence in design. “Despite living in a house full of kids and a large dog, our house was always organized and beautiful. Even if you were sharing a room with a sibling,” Myra says, “no matter how small your individual space, it became a reflection of your personal style. My mother taught me to make ‘big commitment’ decor decisions at a young age. She also showed me the importance of old versus new, frequenting auctions with a discerning eye, for lamps, rugs, furniture and art. This gave me an appreciation for the beauty in authentic antiques.” Having studied architecture, photography, textiles and interior design in college, Myra traveled and worked abroad, living in New Zealand and Europe. Ultimately returning to work in Boston and New York City, she began her career a window designer for department stores. Along the way she began to take on the additional challenges and responsibilities of structural design and project management. In 1998 Myra returned to her roots in Newport, and established her own business. With her intuitive grasp of how to transform any space into an inviting area with a bold statement, she followed her creative muse and made the decision—after a number of her commercial clients in Manhattan began hiring her to decorate their homes—to shift her focus from commercial to residential. Myra is valued by her clients for her ability to manage job sites. Working though problem spots, creating storage areas where there appear to be none, and selecting just the right paint color for a room (including the perfect white) are among her strengths. She creates peaceful spaces with a sense of humor and function that are pleasing, combining glamorous with industrial, and practical with delicate. Her clients treasure her rapport with contractors and easy expertise in interior and structural design. Myra’s warmth, contagious laugh and friendly personality make the client-customer experience a memorable and comfortable collaboration. Her latest work projects, from Newport, Boston, New York, and New Canaan to Charleston, Palm Beach and Aspen reflect that diverse capacity.
